What is COBRA?



COBRA refers to the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985. This law requires that certain employers offer employees and their qualified beneficiaries the opportunity to continue their group health insurance coverage on a self-pay basis. To be eligible, the employee must experience a qualifying event that causes them to lose coverage.

- initial notices upon qualification for group health benefits
- an election notice after the qualifying event
- a follow up confirmation of the final election
- notice of any differences between the amount due and the amount paid
